Brianna, cousin Olivia, Uncle Isaac, Aunt Cathy, cousin Ezekiel,

An Expectation. A Blessing

The Frustrating Thing About Laundry

I am trying to catch up on laundry as I get ready for our upcoming vacation. The frustrating thing about laundry is that unless I stripped the beds of their linens and the entire family of clothing, laundry is never done. Of course this is nothing new.

I guess I can change that from a woe to a sign of blessing. I have been blessed with beautiful children, a loving husband, and a nice home. I remind myself of that as I do housework. I also try to remember and strive towards the model of the Proverbs 31 woman.

Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

Lucy is Feeling Better!

Praises to God! Our little Lucille is on the road to recovery! Lucille has been able to hold her food down for a full 24 hours and she woke up this morning with a smile for the first time in a week. She has been playing all morning, singing & talking. She has her spunk back! Now she just has to regain her strength and the weight she lost.

Here is a video I took of her on March 9th. Lord willing she will be back to this spunky girl by the end of the week.

But I am busy this week with a sick little one. Lucille has a stomache bug.
Since Monday.
She hasn't been able to keep any food down. And today she has been crying/moaning most of the day.
But homeschooling is done.
Corned beef is cooking.

Lucy at 11 months

Last Friday, Lucille was 11 months old. Boy! That was fast, only one more month until her first birthday.

She is just about ready to walk; standing on her own for long periods, taking a couple of steps before falling, and trying to stand from a sitting position. It's only a matter of time before she is toddling around the house.

She has four teeth and she knows how to use them. So be sure that your fingers don't go near her mouth! Lucy says "Mum" pretty clearly. And for some reason, she calls Mercy "Bob."

Today, we caught Lucille on the stairs up to the third step. Did I mention she is fast? Sometimes I think that she beams over to the other side of the room when I am not looking.

Jason & I are so amazed at God's mercy on us and our family. We thank God for blessing us with Lucille and pray for wisdom in raising her.

"Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6

Catherine Lucille - 10 Months

Lucille is 10 months old this month. She is such a blessing to our family. The other day Jason told me that I am more attached to her than I was to our other babies, and I would have to agree. I think it is because I am not taking the fact that I was blessed with another baby for granted.

Lucy is a fast crawler! She likes to try to keep up with Joshua & Mercy, getting into their toys & following them around. She pulls up on everything - tables, chairs, shelves, boxes and she has even tried climbing the stairs. She has even stood up on her own for a few seconds at a time.

Last week her first tooth broke through. She chews on everything, tables, toys, books, & feet if she can catch them.

Lucy loves books, magazines, & papers. She will sit for a long time just turning the pages of a magazine before ripping it apart. She also likes to turn the pages herself when we read her a book.

One day at my mom's house, Lucy had a long stroll in Mercy's doll stroller. She fit into it perfectly and loved to be pushed all around the house as she swung her feet back and forth!

Last week at an appointment with her pediatrician we learned that Lucy only gained 3 ounces in the last 3 months! So we are trying to fatten her up with healthy foods. And I am supplementing a little formula along with her regular nursing. She goes back in 2 weeks to see if she has grown any.

After that appointment, I felt so worried. What if something is wrong with her? Is it me? Am I a bad mother who doesn't feed her child properly? But that worry didn't last long. I refuse to worry. I will just trust in God that everything will work out. And I will be more aware of what she is eating and making sure she is eating healthy and more often.

She IS a big eater now. I have been more aggressive in getting her to eat more, and making all that she eats count. You know she really likes something because she will very loudly demand more as soon as she gets a spoonful. She prefers to feed herself. Some of her favorite foods right now are peanut butter on whole wheat bread, mac and cheese (whole wheat or asparagus noodles), avocado, Joe's Ohs, and pears. But she also likes carrots, potatoes, peas, green beans, bananas, oatmeal cereal and cheese.

If my computer cooperates I hope to post a few pictures and updates....we'll see.

On November 12, Joshua turned nine years old. Time sure flies! I am so thankful to God for giving me a such a happy boy. But I am also reminded that Joshua is halfway to 18! I pray that God would give Jason & me wisdom and grace to raise Joshua correctly. And that God would work in Joshua's heart and grow him into a godly man.

To celebrate his birthday we went to Disneyland. I love going when it is decorated for Christmas! Joshua was given a birthday pin so that all day long whenever a Disney castmember saw it they would wish him a happy birthday. He loved that, it made his day more special.

Never Try on a Dress You Can't Afford...

...because you will love it & nothing you can afford will fit as well or look so good. That is a rule I always follow when shopping. Be it clothes, cars, shoes -whatever! It is a very good rule for life.

Well, today I forgot the rule.

My vacuum cleaner is not working well, so my mom sent over hers so that I can do a good once over on the carpets (which is especially needed since Lucy is now crawling). Her vacuum is a Dyson. And I love it!

I thought that I would not like it because it is a bit chunky and not able to fit under certain things that I am used to vacuuming under. But everything else about it more than makes up for it.

I was able to vacuum those little corners that only an attachment fits into without crawling around the whole house. The Dyson's attachment has a long handle so I was able to just walk around and reach all those far corners. I was also able to easily vacuum the drapes. Boy, do I love this thing!

Also, it is so easy to clean the dust container. Just push this button, hold over the waste bin, & pull that lever - and ta da! All done.

So, now I have to do the only sensible thing: go online and search for all those negative reviews on why the Dyson is the worst vacuum. Then I will feel better about not being able to afford it.

Oh yeah! I forgot. Thank you Mom for letting me borrow your vacuum. No really, thank you.

After Willowbrook Apple Farm, we went over to Sno-Line to see if they had any Winesap apples to buy (they didn't). We did get some apple donuts to nibble on and they did have a few animals to pet. This llama really liked Jason, but didn't like pictures. Everytime I tried to get a picture of Lucy with the llama, it w0uld hide behind Jason and peek over his shoulder!

Oak Glen 2009

On Saturday we made our yearly trek out to Oak Glen. Before we went out I checked out the web sites and was disappointed to read that a late spring frost had wiped out most of this year's apple crop. We decided to go out and make the most of the day.

We started out at Law's Cafe for breakfast. They have a wonderful buffet that is served on the weekends through apple season. Their french toast is the best! They also offer eggs, bacon (Joshua says it is the best he ever tasted), potatoes, sausage, ham, freshly made cinammon rolls, pastries, apple butter, apple topping, fruit, home made salsa, waffles, and more I am probably forgetting. I wish I had a bigger stomach!

Next, we went to Willowbrook Farm to make cider. We always start out at the tasting table. They offer most of their products to sample. This year they offered their first batch of apple blossom honey. It was tasty!

This was Lucy's first trip to Oak Glen. She really enjoyed being outdoors. It helped that it was a beautiful cool day.

Jason and Joshua were hanging out waiting to press cider. The owners and workers at Willowbrook are so friendly and helpful. They remembered us from past years & were happy to see our new addition.

First Day of School

We took some pictures on our first day of school, August 24. Mercy was very excited about her first day. She woke up early, picked out a dress, & was ready to go.

She is a funny girl as this picture shows. We started calling it Year 1 because Jason does not like the K word. It has something to do with the word being a holdover from the Prussian system & it representing the state's idea of the indoctrination of children (you gotta love him).

Joshua looks very excited to be starting school in this picture, but he is just a great big ham and loves pictures.

Lucy was just over six months for this picture. She usually sits on a big blanket right in front of this easel.

Well, it has been awhile since I have posted anything. It has been asked that I begin posting again, so I will try to keep you all up to date.

Sometimes I think that the only ones who read this are my Uncle Alex and Rosanne. But I think even if it is only the two of you, you are both worth the effort!

We enjoyed a beautful Fall day today. We don't get very many of those out here in Southern California. I am pretty sure that Redwood city gets nice Fall weather, and I am sure that Des Moines has perfect Autumn days. But we don't usually enjoy such days. There were even a few drops of rain this afternoon. And tonight has brought sweater weather!

We all recently were hit with the flu. I don't know if it was the H1N1 virus, but it was pretty bad. What made it worse was that all five of us came down with it. Little Lucy was so pitiful but she was a strong, brave girl through her first sickness. Praise God that we are all feeling better (besides this terrible cough I have).

In late August, we started home schooling again. Joshua is in fourth grade and Mercy is in Kindergarten (we are calling it year 1). Lucy sits on the floor and plays or talks (she sounds like a little Wookiee). It isn't as hard I thought it would be to school and take care of a baby. God is good.

We are looking forward to some Fall activities - apple picking, decorating the house with pumpkins & leaves, Joshua's birthday, Thanksgiving, and baking. I will keep you updated.

I know I have been remiss in my postings of late, but I am back! Let's see... what has been happening in the Davis household?

We had our house painted in May. Besides it looking cleaner, you really can't tell as the color we picked looks the same as the color we had. The swatch we went off of looked darker. Oh well, we really did like the color we had.

Joshua's little league season is over. His team made it to the playoffs & finished second in his division. Mercy continues with gymnastics & Joshua with violin. They both have recently started swimming lessons. Also, Jason is playing softball & soccer. All this makes for a very busy family.

Officially, we are done with the 2008-2009 homeschool year. I have some subjects that we plan to work on throughout the summer. We are going through How to Teach Art to Children which will teach the 7 elements of art. We are also doing unit studies in geography and astronomy. Joshua will do math review (so as not to forget). And Jason and I will continue to teach Mercy to read. In the fall we will have a fourth grader & a kindergartener. Boy time flies!

And let's not forget the tiniest member of the family, Lucy! She is four months old and growing bigger everyday. She can roll, but she'd rather not. She drinks water from a sipper cup, but she usually spits it out. And she brings such joy to our home. Speaking of which, I must go attend to her. I will post more updates and pictures later.

Mercy is 5!

Mercy is now five years old.
Jason & I let her plan a special night out. We started out with her favorite pizza at Jojo's. After, we went to the Shoppes for an outdoor viewing of the movie Wallie. It drizzled a little throughout the movie but Joshua, Mercy & Jason stuck it out while Lucy & I sat in the car. Then it was off to the bookstore where Mercy asked that she and her brother each get to pick a book. We finished the night with hot cocoa at Starbucks.

It was a long night (we didn't get home until after 10pm), but it a fun night spent witth our little blessings.

This week's installment of Foto Friday brings us a picture of Jason with Reggie Jackson. I am not sure how old he is in this picture but I would guess around eight.

Jason went to Eastland Shopping Mall in West Covina with his mom and Aunt Rosanne to see Mr. Jackson who was to be at a sports store's grand opening. Before going to the sports store they stopped for some popcorn. When Jason arrived at the front of the line for his autograph, Mr. Jackson asked where he had bought the popcorn and then asked if Jason would buy him some. Jason agreed, Mr. Jackson gave Jason the money and Jason ran to buy the popcorn. When he got back, Jason gave Mr. Jackson his popcorn and change and got to talk to him for a short while.

Lucy is now two months old! She is such a joy to have!

Lucy sleeps about 6-8 hours every night, but she is a cat-napper during the day. She is very alert. She will look at someone walk across the room, and try to turn her head all the way around to continue watching. She smiles, coos, & loves to swing.

Please Pray For My Dad

I just got a call from my mom, telling me that my dad is in the hospital with an intestinal blockage. He went in sometime last night with what he thought was food poisoning. The doctors are treating it with medication but if that doesn't work he will need surgery.

Please pray that God would give the doctors wisdom in diagnosing and treating my dad, also that my dad would recover from this without the need for surgery. Pray also for my mom, that she would be comforted & strengthened in this trial.

Three Little Kiddies

Jason & I took the children out for ice cream today and I was struck by the fact that we now have THREE children. As is often said, we are out-numbered! I am so thankful to God for these blessings. I am also thankful for the grace that He daily gives me to look after these little ones. And how I need it!

Joshua loves to hold Lucy, and he is always giving her kisses & rubbing her head. Lucy loves to look at her big brother, her eyes will follow him as he walks by & she tries to turn her little puff head all the way around to continue watching.

Mercy and Lucy have inherited my big cheeks. Poor little girls!

Mercy always wants to hold Lucy, she is always hugging, kissing, & putting her arm around her baby sister. Lucy does not usually like this attention, but this morning Lucy was smiling and cooing at Mercy's antics.

Life with Lucy is much more hectic. I am tired all the time, & my house is a mess (more so than usual). But life is also much fuller. When I see those three beautiful faces each morning, I thank God for His goodness.

Last night, my brother graduated from the San Bernardino Sheriff's Law Enforcement Academy. He has been hired to work for the Claremont Police Department. I am very proud of my little brother! Whenever he sets his sights on something, he works hard to achieve it and doesn't give up. I really look up to him for that.
I have been praying that God would bless his career as a law enforcement officer, keeping him safe & humble in his duty.

Lucy's Doctor Appointment

Yesterday, I took Lucy for a well baby check-up. The appointment was at 1:30. At 2:45 I was in the examine room and still waiting for the doctor to come in! I was so frustrated, especially since I know that well baby check-ups only take a couple of minutes to weigh, measure & quickly check over the baby.

To make me feel a little better, Lucy stuck it to them by pooing & peeing on the scale when she was undressed to be weighed! Other than that, she was very good. She didn't cry at all when the doctor examined her. She is now 7 lbs. 11oz.

I will now switch doctors to the one that the other children use, which is too bad because I really like this doctor but can't stand the way the office is run.

Lucy is already 2 weeks old! We are so very thankful that God has been gracious to us in giving us this beautiful and healthy girl!

Lucy has been a very good baby. She is very alert, flashing us those pretty gray eyes. And she is very strong!

In January of 2006, my parents took the whole family on a Mexican vacation. There were ten of us: my parents; my 2 sisters, Marina & Bri; my brother, Isaac; his fiance (now wife), Cathy; and my family of four. We stayed at the La Jolla de Mismaloya Resort in Puerto Vallarta. It was a beautiful resort, the weather was perfect & we all had an unforgettable time.

Joshua's first time on a horse. We took an approx. 45 minute ride up through jungle to the Garden of Eden where the Predator movie was filmed.

We took a boat to see Los Arcos up close. Then we went to a small town only accessible by boat where we hiked up to a waterfall. On the boat ride back, we stopped at another beach only accessible by boat, called Las Animas where we had a delicious lunch.

Update On My Cousin Joshua

Joshua was released from the hospital yesterday, having not yet received any surgery and still in great pain. His insurance would no longer allow him to stay at the trauma hospital he was at as he was no longer considered a trauma. He is now waiting to be admitted to Loma Linda and to be reevaluated for his necessary surgeries to fix his face.

I praise God that He has been merciful in waking Joshua with no apparent brain damage & that doctor's feel that he will eventually make a full recovery! Please continue to pray for my cousin as he still has a long way to go until he is fully recovered. Also, as the accident was his fault and he was found to have been driving under the influence of alcohol, he is facing serious charges. He hit a couple of other cars and there were other injured parties. He has woken to this new reality that he must face the consequences to. Please continue to pray that God would use this to draw Joshua to Himself!

Prayer Request For My Cousin Joshua

Early this morning my cousin Joshua was in a car accident. He is now hospitalized and in an induced coma. His face hit the steering wheel of his truck on impact & most of his face, below his eyes, is broken. He also has severe lacerations on his head. The doctors did some preliminary tests and do not believe that there is any brain damage, but we will know for sure when he awakes. He will have to undergo several surgeries in the coming days to repair the damage.

My cousin is 21 years old. He has gone through some tough times in the past few years; the biggest being his father dying of cancer last year. Please pray for Joshua's recovery and that God would use this Providence for his good. Also pray for Joshua's mom, Yolanda and his sister, Amanda. Pray that the Lord would comfort them and use this to draw them to Himself.

As I was looking through my Picasa pictures, I decided that I would start posting random photos of the family & our happenings. We have so many pictures, and we rarely share them. So here it is, the first Foto Friday!

A few weeks ago we went to John's Incredible Pizza Co. I asked Jason to take a picture of Mercy and me. Mercy insisted we had to be eating our pizza for the picture.

A couple of weeks ago, we went to the playhouse at the Victoria Garden's Cultural Center to see a play. The play was A Year With Frog and Toad, based on the book by Arnold Lobel. We attended the play with our home school group.Joshua waiting to go in.A shot of the home school group.

We had read the book together before we went. The play was very entertaining. I highly recommend their family plays. We have attended at least four and we have never been disappointed. I like that they usually have live music, and the actors are very talented.

After the play we had lunch at Victoria Gardens. It was a very enjoyable outing.

Valentine's Sweetheart Dinner

This past Saturday, Jason & I attended a Sweetheart Dinner which was hosted by our homeschool group. The dinner was held at the McCoy Equestrian Center in Chino Hills.

The tables were beautifully decorated, and the food was delicious! We had an Italian dinner which consisted of lasagna, chicken fetuccini alfredo, penne, salad, and garlic bread. For dessert we had a choice of chocolate cake or cheesecake.

The night was set up to be a celebration of the love God has given to us in our marriages. We took pictures together (like in high school!). And we heard a talk encouraging us in our marriages by a couple, Lin and Barb Wells, who were celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary that night. The talk was a real blessing.

Overall, the night was very enjoyable. I was able to spend a romantic night with my wonderful husband, and at the same time hear about how God works in our marriage.

Rock Star Mercy

I took this video this morning. Mercy is wearing what she calls a rock star outfit while singing and playing her "electric" guitar. The guitar was a Christmas gift from her Aunt Cathy and Uncle Isaac. I can't wait until they have children and I can buy loud obnoxious toys for them. But really, Mercy loves her guitar and often plays it and makes us lovely songs to go along.

Preparing For Baby

As we are counting down the days until we bring a newborn into our home for the third time, I have been re-reading some of my trusted baby books.

For pregnancy and delivery I have two favorite books. The first is What to Expect When You’re Expecting, it has been called a must-have book for parents to be, and I have found it very helpful through all of my pregnancies. The second book is The Whole Pregnancy Handbook, which is a guide that combines both conventional and alternative medicine. I just found this book during this pregnancy, and I have been very thankful for the advice on how to have a healthy pregnancy and delivery. The only thing that I don't like is that the spiritual or mind/body advice & testimonials in the the book are in no way Christian, but overall I recommend the book.

I have also re-read On Becoming Baby Wise by Gary Ezzo, & Robert Bucknam. When Joshua was about 8 months old & still not sleeping through the night, a friend recommended Baby Wise to us. I read the book and immediately started using the techiniques in the book. That night Joshua slept through the night, it was hard at first, but it worked. With Mercy we started scheduling her from the beginning and she was sleeping for 7-8 hrs. through the night at about 8 weeks. Again, I don't agree with everything in the book, but it has worked for us. Also note that Gary Ezzo has some controversial teachings (parent-directed feeding) and many people disagree with his work and organization (Growing Kid's International).

I also have taken out my dog-eared and falling apart copy of The Baby Book: Everything You Need to Know About Your Baby From Birth to Age Two by William & Martha Sears. I have used this book with both Joshua & Mercy. Again, Dr. Sears is a follower of attachment parenting (which can be considered the opposite of Gary Ezzo's methods) and I am not an adherent to that style of child rearing. I like to think that by using both Baby Wise and the Baby Book I get a good mix, and it has really worked for our family.

Disneyland Trip

Last week, the children & I took a two-day trip to the Disneyland Resort with a stay at the Disneyland Hotel. We went with my sister Marina. We spent all the first day at Disneyland. It was a beautiful, clear day and the park was not too crowded.

After the park closed we went back to our hotel room. The children were so excited! The hotel has a lot of cute little Disney touches which made our stay special for the children. In the evenings, the hotel has a TV channel with a Disney Princess telling bedtime stories. Mercy loved that!The headboards and bedspreads had scenes from Disneyland.

The TV armiore had a map of Disneyland, the walls had a Tinkerbell fairy dust pattern that was glow-in-the-dark.

The bathroom had Disney character wallpaper, the lights were held up with Mickey hands, & the toiletry bottle caps were Mickey shaped.

The next morning we went to the Grand Californian's Storyteller Cafe for the Chip & Dale Character Breakfast. The food was yummy and the service was excellent.

After breakfast, we headed over to California Adventure. We got on a few rides, toured the tortilla and bread factories, and visited the Hollywood area. The children rode & enjoyed the new Toy Story ride for the first time.

I did not ride most of the rides on our trip. I did do a lot of walking, especially the first day. I actually overdid myself on the trip and was not feeling well when we arrived home after the second day and also the next day. But overall our spur of the moment trip went well. I know the children will remember it for a long time.

Grammy Betty

Tomorrow our family will be heading out to Victorville to attend the memorial service for Jason’s grandmother. Betty passed away suddenly on December 12th after a short hospital stay.

Betty was a beautiful, 81 year-old woman who stayed active through volunteer work and club memberships. She was a voracious reader who passed that love along in her volunteer work teaching literacy. She got around Victorville in her hip, green, Ford Mustang; going to chat group meetings and visiting friends.

Betty was a joy to converse with. I enjoyed chats at family gatherings, she always had a smile and would intersperse Yiddish words or sayings into the conversation.

I will never forget one of the first times I met her when Jason and I were still dating. We were eating dinner, and my meal came with a large piece of broccoli. I don’t eat broccoli. She kept raving about my broccoli. “What a beautiful piece of broccoli!” “Look at that piece of broccoli!” “I hope you are going to eat that broccoli.” Needless to say I choked down that broccoli! Jason and I still joke about that every time broccoli is served.

Betty had 5 children, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Her loving spirit is missed by the many lives she touched.

Portrait Sitting

Before Christmas, I took the children to JC Penney's to have their pictures taken. The last time I took them in for a professional portrait sitting was probably at least two years ago! I wanted to give the grandparents a framed portrait of their grandchildren as a Christmas present, which went over very well.

Thanksgiving Cooking

This past Thanksgiving, we spent with Jason's mother's family. It was nice in that we didn't have to travel far, they live just 5 minutes away. We enjoyed a nice quiet dinner.

The children, my sister Marina, and I had made pumpkin pies, cranberry sauce, and cranberry-apple pie with a crumb topping. Everything was delicious! I also made Yams with Ginger and Scallions. I made these last year as well and they were a big hit. The recipe is from last year's Thanksgiving issue of Saveur Magazine. It is a simple yam recipe, with all fresh ingredients. The mix of flavors is amazing!

Today is Joshua's eighth birthday. It really is amazing how quickly they grow!

We will be celebrating with a quiet dinner at home. I am making Joshua's favorite dinner - corned beef! We will have it with leek champ, carrots, turnips, cabbage, horseradish cream, & corn bread. For dessert: chocolate cupcakes & chocolate chip cookies.

I am thankful to God for His giving us Joshua. He is a loving, adventurous, thoughtful, and mischievous child! I pray that the Lord will give Jason and I wisdom and grace to raise a God-honoring son.

Cider Pressing!

This year, was the first time that we tried pressing our own cider. We think the cider tasted better, because we had to work so hard before we enjoyed it.

Joshua and Jason had the hard work of turning the wheel to smash the apples through the grinder.

Mercy and I had the easy job of putting the apple in the grinder.

After the apples were grinded, we had to turn the press to squeeze all the juice out of the apples. And then the cider is poured into a gallon bottle after going through a filter to take out any large pieces and bees that fell into the vat.

We had a wonderful morning in Oak Glen. Breakfast, apple picking, and cider pressing! We can't wait until next year!

Oak Glen

Last month we took our annual trip to Oak Glen. We woke up early to get there in time for breakfast. We ate at Law's Cafe, where they serve a buffet breakfast. It was delicious! I highly recommend it, but if you go get there early. We got there a couple of minutes before the buffet started, and the dining room was almost full of people waiting to eat. By the time we got up to get in line at the buffet, there was a line of people waiting outside to get in. But it is worth it! Yummy!

After breakfast, we headed over to Willowbrook Apple Farm for apple picking and cider pressing. It is a small family run farm. The children were able to feed and pet Duke, the horse, again. This year they had a new pot bellied pig, she was so cute and excited to meet us.

It was a beautiful, crisp, clear morning.

I tried to get Jason to take a picture with the children. It is almost impossible to get that man to smile!

But after some work, I was able to coax a smile out of him!

I had to help Mercy pick apples. It was only the second weekend that Willowbrook was open, so there were plenty of apples that were low for the children to pick.

Reformation Night

As we do not observe Halloween, each year we look for ways to avoid the celebration of it. I find it increasingly hard as the children grow older to keep them from the holiday. Everywhere we go there are reminders of it. We couldn't go to any store without seeing decorations and people would ask the children what they were going to dress up as. I am so happy that that is over with for the year!

This past Friday, we went to our church's Refomation Night. October 31st is Reformation Day, a holiday in rememberance of the reformation. It is celebrated on the anniversary of the day in 1517 that Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany.

RBCR had games and activities for the children to learn about the reformation and have fun.

I Voted. Did You?

We bundled up against the rain this morning to be at our polling place at 7 am when it opened. We arrived at the Calvary Chapel a little after voting started, and only had to wait about 30 minutes to cast our vote. I was happy about this because I was afraid we would have a long wait, which wouldn't be fun with two children.

I talked to both Joshua & Mercy about a possible long wait, and that I didn't want to hear complaining or whining. I forgot to have the same talk with Jason! And if you know my husband and his views about politics & government in general (not to mention his dry sense of humor), then you know what I had to listen to for that 1/2 hr. wait. Such as: "Where are all these people at all the other elections." "They only come out to vote for a presidential election." "It's not like our votes are even going to be counted correctly." "This is all a government racket!"

As I was waiting to vote, I heard the polling place workers talking about some complaints they were getting about a giant "Yes on 8" sign outside the window. The woman in charge of the polling location said that as long as it was 100 feet away it was legal.

This is a picture of the Calvary Chapel. Just inside that big window is where voting was taking place, so we all had a clear view of the sign while we cast our vote. I thought it was funny because it looks like this is a "Yes on 8 Polling Station."

I know that whatever the outcome of the elections, God is in control. We should not fret, but instead, trust in Him and his providences.

We had an ultrasound today! The ultrasound technician was pretty positive that we will be having a girl. So Lord willing, sometime around February 26, 2009 we will be welcoming little Catherine Lucille into our family. We are preparing to be inundated with pink yet again! As I was laying there having the ultrasound I was so thankful to God that He has blessed us with this little one, and brought us this far. He is such a merciful and caring Father!

We will have to wait two more weeks to find out whether we will have a little Lupe or Lupita (no, those aren't the names we have chosen). I went in for my OB appointment this morning and Dr. Lopez said we need to wait until the baby is a little bigger. I was disappointed about that, but I was happy to hear a strong heartbeat and receive clear AFP test results! What a blessing!

Mama Tey

On Saturday, September 13, 2008, my grandmother, Esther died of ovarian cancer. Mama Tey (a name her family lovingly called her) was 81 years old. She had been diagnosed with cancer only the week before her death.

Mama Tey loved to travel. She had visited Israel, Germany, South America, Egypt, and various other places. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, embroidery, and crocheting. Mama Tey was also a great cook. She made tasty chili verde, caldo, rice, and even her quesadillas were the best. Her dish I will miss the most, especially on a cold afternoon, is sweet rice!

Mama Tey had six children, 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. She will be missed by the many who loved her.

Prayer for My Family

My grandmother, Mama Tey, has been in the hospital since last Tuesday. The doctors have been running many tests. We were told that she has ovarian cancer. Today, we received the final test results. She has ovarian cancer, that has now wrapped around her intestines. Her kidneys are also not doing well. We have been told that she has about 3 months left.

Mama Tey should be coming home today and will be receiving in-home hospice care. Jason and I would appreciate prayer for Mama Tey and also my entire family; especially, my parents who will be providing her care. Please pray that the Lord will work in the lives of my family through this difficult time.

Mercy is Feeling Better!

We are very thankful that our little Mercy is up and about after three days of sickness! She has had a high fever, along with lethargy, loss of appetite, headaches, and vomiting since Tuesday. Today, she was up and playing and talking non-stop all day. Praise God that we are in His hands in our sickness and in our health. When my children are ill, I am especially reminded of what a blessing they are in our lives.

I have to post a rave review for the website Educational Accents! This is a site that buys and sells used homeschool curriculum. I have purchased from them in the past and they have great prices as well as speedy shipping.

Last week, I placed another order. When I received the shipment this week, I realized that one of the books I ordered, Famous Men of Greece, was not the full textbook, but a guide for the book. I checked the receipt and it simply said Famous Men of Greece. I wasn't sure if the mistake was mine or edaccents. I decided not to do anything, especially since the cost was so little.

The next day, I received an email from edaccents asking me to comment on my order. I think I gave them 4 out of 5 stars. And mentioned the mistake. Later that afternoon, I received a phone call from an edaccents representative. She apologized for the mistake and said that they were going to ship the correct book out and that I could keep the guide they had sent! Talk about quick, responsive customer service!

I am really impressed with this website. Even though the mistake may not have been their fault, they wanted to make sure that I was satisfied. The next time I need homeschool books, I will definitely check them first.

Yesterday was Jason's birthday! We spent it just the way he wanted: quietly at home with a home cooked meal. I told him I would make whatever he wanted, which I thought would be shepherd's pie. He chose fettucine alfredo, glazed carrots, home-made bread, and chocolate chip cookies. We had a very relaxing evening.

Earthquakes! Hills in Motion

Yesterday, the children and I sat down at about 11:35 am for read aloud time. We were reading Volcanoes! Mountains of Fire about the Mount St. Helens eruption.

The children love this story of volcanoes and people's accounts of what it was like. We were just reading about a family camping in a nearby cabin ("Thunder shakes the cabin. Lightning looks like a flash from a giant camera. When bits of ash bump into each other in the clouds, they make static electricity. This creates bolts of lightning.") when I heard a big bang. It felt like the house was lifted and dropped.

As the shaking grew more intense, we ran to the hall doorway where we stayed for the remainder of the quake. I will say it felt like the strongest and loudest quake that I can remember. When I was sure it was over, I hugged my little ones and we went back to the couch and said a prayer thanking God for watching over us and asking for strength to not be scared but to trust in Him!

Mercy stayed clinging to me for at least 45 minutes, and even after would not leave my side (last night she woke up saying she was scared, which is rare for her). Joshua was shaken, but also a bit excited.

Our home is about 5 miles from the epicenter. We didn't have any damage. Just books fallen off shelves, some candles fell from my dresser, and a few things in the garage fell.

We Are Expecting!

Our family is looking forward to a new addition sometime in late February or early March of next year. My doctor will give me a more precise due date at my next appointment (next month).

We are thankful to God for giving this blessing to us and we pray that we will have a healthy and uneventful pregnancy and delivery. Whatever the next 7 to 8 months brings us, we are trusting in our Lord and take comfort in His words to us:

"Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." -Joshua 1:9

Egg Hunt

This past weekend was another busy one. First, let me say congratulations to Jason's softball team who won their league championship game on Saturday night. Go Cobra Kai!

On Saturday, we also attended our HOA's egg hunt. The children always have a fun time. This year, Mercy moved up an age category for the hunt.

Raining and Pouring

This week God has showered us with his love and mercy. And I am so very thankful!

Our week started with Mercy's sickness, and my grandmother's hospitalization. Mercy is feeling much better with just a little runny nose. Mama Te is home from the hospital, still recovering and feeling pain, but her blood sugar is down!

On Wednesday night, Jason and Joshua were on their way to prayer meeting when they were involved in a car accident. They were stopped on the Blaine Street off-ramp when a car hit them from behind, pushing them into the car ahead. The airbags deployed. They are both unhurt (mostly). The car is a total loss (most likely).

Yesterday, we spent the day calling insurance companies, and waiting for call backs. The insurance company is supposed to look at the car today to see what is to be done. As of now we have no car. My sister Bri, ever giving and loving, has lent us her car for a few days.

Today, Joshua woke up with a fever and sore throat. Jason is back at work, but he says his whole body still feels sore from the accident. Also, his left arm is hurting.

In all the events of the week, I am thankful. We are in His hands, and that is comforting.

Trusting and Praying

I post this evening asking for prayer. I just learned that my grandmother is in the hospital. I am told that her blood sugar is extremely high and continues to climb, she is vomiting black, and the doctors say she needs a blood transfusion. My grandmother's name is Esther, she is 80 years old, and has been experiencing declining health and spirits for a few months now.

I really want to be at the hospital with her and my family, but Mercy has come down with a fever and vomiting this evening.

Please pray that the Lord would help the doctors to treat my grandmother, and that she would have a strong desire to be well. Also, please pray for me, that I would fully trust in God and His Divine Work in all things.

Our Valentine's Dinner

Sorry, I have been remiss in my blog posting of late. We have been happily busy with activities.

This weekend is the Little League Opening Day and if the rain doesn't prevent it, Joshua will have his first ball game of the season. Go Tigers! Jason also is set to have a game that day. We are also looking forward to the Winter Music Festival of the Western Society of Chamber Music on Saturday night. It is a great way to introduce the family to classical music.

We had a very enjoyable Valentine's dinner. The children helped in the kitchen, and had a blast decorating the table. They did an awesome job.

They wanted lots of candles! So I lit up the candelabra and tea lights.

We had champagne and sparkling apple cider. The children were so excited that they got to use the glass champagne flutes.

Sugar Cookies!

The children each arranged a vase of flowers. Mercy decorated place cards. Joshua made construction paper hearts and wrote a Bible verse about love on each one, he then placed one under each plate as a surprise.

It was a special family dinner. We all agreed that we should make it an annual tradition. I am already thinking of ideas for next year!

Valentine's Dinner

The children & I have decided to cook a nice Valentine's Day dinner this year. We are planning on steak, baked potatoes, and asparagus cooked in white wine. We also will be making sugar cookies!

Right now, Joshua and Mercy are trying to decide what to make for a centerpiece. They love doing crafts! Joshua says there should be hearts. Mercy says that it should be "mantic." So we will probably have a romantic heart-shaped centerpiece!

Our Dating Anniversary!

On this date, 13 years ago, my husband and I started dating. We don't celebrate this occasion any longer, but we did for the almost 5 years that we were dating.

God has really blesssed me since he brought this wonderful man into my life. I am a wife to a wonderful, godly man, I have two healthy, beautiful children, a lovely home, a loving family, and a supportive, God-honoring church.

The Year is Flying By - Already!

Today is the last day of January. Can you believe it? That really flew by. Of course we have been very busy with activities. Jason started a new softball season. Mercy is in gymnastics. Joshua continues his violin lessons, & his first Little League meeting is tonight. Add to that field trips, family get-togethers, library visits, home schooling, and life in general. Wow!

I am so thankful to God for blessing our family with all these opportunities. My family is happy & healthy. I look forward to the rest of the year and what the Lord brings our way!

Carbon Canyon Nature Trail

This past Saturday we headed out to Carbon Canyon Park. This time we decided to hike the 1-mile nature trail that ends in a beautiful 10-acre grove of Coastal Redwood trees.

The trail was an easy one, mostly level and straight. Mercy found lots of sticks along the way that she called "Swords of Truth." Usually when we take the children to a park, I like to bring a brown paper bag for each of them. In it they put the "treasure" that they find - interesting rocks, pinecones, flowers, etc..

After the hike we had a picnic and relaxed. It was another beautiful day at the park.

Yesterday, Mercy had her first haircut. I should say she had her first professional haircut. Her first haircut was last July when her brother cut a big chunk off the top and out of the side.
Before we left the house she was so excited about going to have it done. On the way there she practically jumped out of the car because she changed her mind. When we arrived, the stylist told her to pick any chair she wanted - Mercy walked out the door!
We eventually coaxed her into the chair with bubbles and she did a wonderful job of sitting still.

Lake Arrowhead

Our family spent the week of New Year's up in Lake Arrowhead with Jason's father, step-mother, and siblings. We had a relaxing time hiking, playing games, and just hanging out. The children were dissappointed that there was not any snow, so we took them to a sledding hill with man-made snow. That is where Mercy (above) made "the smallest snowball in the world."

We stopped at a turnout on the way up the mountain because Jason was scaring me trying to look at the view while driving.

We were able to play lots of games on our trip. I lost count of how many times Joshua beat his dad at Stratego.

Holiday Festival of Trains

Last Friday I took the children to the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace in Yorba Linda. I had seen on the news that they are having a special exhibit called A Holiday Festival of Trains and since both my little ones love trains I decided it would be a fun excursion.

Here are Joshua and Mercy right outside the exhibit room. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to use the flash on the camera so I didn't get any good pictures of the trains (they were all blurry). But it was a large setup with at least 8 trains running through various villages and Christmas scenes.

After looking at the train exhibit, we toured the entire library. The children enjoyed looking at the decorated Christmas trees throughout the library. Each tree was themed. They had trees decorated for different countries, trees dedicated to the presidents, and even one with the first ladies. Next to the trees for the countries, there was a short description of how that country celebrates.

Overall, it was an enjoyable day. A perfect way to spend a rainy day. I didn't think the children would be that interested in the history side of the library, but I found that certain exhibits did pique their interests (such as a piece of the Berlin wall, the life-size statues of 10 world leaders, & the White House East Room reproduction), which led to some interesting questions and discussions.

Joshua is 7!

On November 12, our little guy Joshua turned 7!
WoW! Where does the time go? To celebrate, we went to John's Incredible Pizza in Montclair. It was a surprise for the boy, when he arrived and saw his grandparents and aunts and uncle waiting for him he was so happy!

After we chowed on the all-you-can-eat buffet, we had chocolate-chocolate cake which is both Joshua and Mercy's favorite.

Joshua went home with a trunk-load of gifts. His Uncle Isaac gave him this nice Stratego game which Joshua loves to play. He can already beat his dad.
After pizza, cake, & gifts, we all went over to play games.

I don't know who had more fun playing - the children or the adults. This is my sis-in-law Cathy, and Jason getting carried away at the shooting gallery.

Remembering Our Glory Babies

Today was one of those days when my heart felt like it was breaking all over again over the loss of our babies. Sorrow and grief are strange emotions, in that they can come and go with such an intensity - for what may seem like no reason.

One of the things that is hard in losing an unborn baby, is that you don't really have anything to remember them by. This may sound odd...I guess what I mean is that when I am feeling sad and missing my uncle who has passed, I can remember what he looked like, the way he would rub my ears, or his pet name for me. But with someone you have never met, there is a certain lonely longing or emptiness because of the lack of memories.

There are a couple of ways that I try to remember my lost babies by: With the baby that I lost in March, I have an ultrasound picture...My sister gave me a lovely figurine of a mother holding a tiny baby, the statue is all white with no facial features, it sits on my vanity...There is a song called "Glory Baby" by a Christian group named Watermark, that is about losing an unborn baby, which I like to listen to.

On days like these, I find myself looking to God for comfort and healing that I know only He can provide. Drawing near to the Lord through prayer and scripture, I find myself thanking Him for what He has blessed me with and becoming hopeful again.

October Beach Day

I have been negligent in my posting. Here is the first of a few belated blog posts.

One Saturday in late October, Jason and I decided to take the family to the beach. We had spent the prior week cooped up in the house due to the smoke and ash of the local wildfires, & we felt a day out was sorely needed. Even though the day was gray, smokey, & drizzly at home, it was crisp & fresh at the coast and the sun shone through the clouds.

The water was COOLLD!! But that didn't stop the children from getting drenched while playing in the waves.

We all played frisbee.

Mercy made sand angels.

It seemed we were the only ones who thought it was a good day to go to the beach, the beach was empty most of the time we were there. It was a peaceful & enjoyable day. I was especially thankful for the chance to slow down to appreciate & enjoy the gifts that God has given me.

Apple Picking!

A couple of weekends ago Jason and I took the kids to Oak Glen for apple picking! We were all very excited because we had never picked apples before. First, we stopped at the Snow-Line Orchard for apple cider donuts. Yummy! They were fresh, and steaming hot. We were also able to see apples being pressed at their cider mill.

Next, we went to the Willowbrook Apple Farm. This is a very small family affair. It was their first weekend that they were open for the season. We had a wonderful time! They had apples and other apple products available for tasting, which were all delicious. The children enjoyed seeing the horse, the chicken (there was only one, as the others were eaten by a bear!), and the little dog named SugarBear.
This was our bag of Stayman Winesap apples. The children picked a few apples and then just wanted to run around and explore.

This past week has found me constantly going to this verse for comfort and peace. It is hard to see why God would try us in this way again. But knowing that I don't have to understand it, just trust in Him and His purpose, gets me through each day.

We covet the prayers of all our friends and family. It gives us comfort to know that so many are loving, caring, and lifting us up.

Sing Praises!

We are taking our morning break from school. Joshua is rebuilding his train track. Mercy is playing quietly.

Earlier, during our math lesson, Mercy decided it was a good time to sing. "ALLELUIA! ALLELUIAAAAA! LET ME HIDE MYSELF IN THEEEEE! ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA! YOU ARE MY GOD! YOU ARE MY GOD!!" I thought it was a lovely song, but I told her that now was not the time for loud singing. She said, "But Mom God always wants us to sing praises to Him!"

How can I argue with that?

A Chamber Music Performance

This past Saturday we took the children to their first classical music concert, which was hosted by the Western Society of Chamber Music. Jason and I have been wanting to do this, but we were unsure of how a fidgety six year old and chatty 3 year old would do for an entire performance. So we looked at the Society's webpage, it said that each event is "fit for the seasoned concert-goer, the new listener, and the entire family." Also, the event was FREE! We decided we had nothing to lose; if the children were misbehaved we could leave early without feeling like we wasted money.

There was a pre-concert performance by a fourth grade girl playing the violin. Joshua enjoyed that since he is taking violin lessons. The concert itself started at 7:30 with a presentation of the life of Johannes Brahms. The speaker was a little hard to follow, and I have to admit that I was a little bored. But then the music started it was wonderful. It was the Piano Trio No. 1 in B Major, Op. 8 by Brahms. This first half of the concert lasted about an hour. Then an intermission.

The children were a little fidgety. I brought some fruit snacks for them to share, & Mercy played with a couple of stuffed animals. At the intermission we decided to leave. The children enjoyed the music, but we felt that they may not make it through the second half. Joshua said that he wanted to stay, but we promised him we would come to another performance.

I would recommend the Western Society of Chamber Music to other families. The performance was very family friendly, the theatre was spacious, and the music was great. Also, the concerts are offered free of charge (they do have a case in the lobby for donations). We will definitely plan to make it to future performances!

Angels Baseball Clinic

On Saturday, August 11, we took Joshua to an Anaheim Angel's Youth Baseball Clinic @ Chino Hills Community Park. The children were given free t-shirts & hats before they were herded around a ball field & made to listen to two-bit players & coaches spew baseball knowledge. All while sitting in the blistering sun!

No, really now. There were a couple of starting players. Outfielder Reggie Willits led the Outfield Station. Infielder Maicer Izturis (who the night before hit his 1st career Grand Slam against the Twins!) was at the Infield Station. And Ron Roenicke, Angel's bench coach, was in charge of the Batting Station.

Joshua was ready to meet some Angel's players. He was hoping for Cabrera, his favorite player. Jason was more lucky, he was hoping for Willits to be there.

Roenicke demonstrated proper batting stance to a bunch of 4-7 year olds whose eyes were glazed over.

From my standpoint, it seemed that the dads in the crowd were the most excited about the entire event. Unfortunately for them, they were made to stay off the field during the stations. Until it was time for autographs. By that time we were ready to go home & cool off. And since my guys don't care much about autographs, that's what we did.

Boy, is it hot! Even though it doesn't feel like it, the summer is coming to an end. And the new school term is approaching fast. I am ready! Or I think I am....Kinda...Maybe not so much. Oh well. We plan to start on August 27. I have mapped out our lessons, & set some goals as to where I would like for us to be by Thanksgiving. How that all meshes out is another story. I'm relying on God & prayer to make this schooling year fun & fruitful.

We are currently enjoying the air conditioning & the cool nights. Jason likes watching his Angels & lounging in the hammock. Joshua enjoys tending our garden & playing ball. Mercy is getting pretty good on her scooter. And I love eating dinner out back; afterwards, we sit outside, sip a summer drink & enjoy all the blessings God has surrounded us with.

Today we went to The Sawdust Factory in Upland. It is a great place to go & pick a wood project to paint & put together. They have many projects to choose from such as wall hangings, yard stakes, picture frames, cars, and trinket boxes. Between the six of us we made four yard stakes.

Another Day @ Carbon Canyon Park

Today we spent the day at Carbon Canyon Park. We packed a picnic, sporting equipment, bikes, & scooters and loaded them into the truck for a fun filled day in the California sun!

Our Loss

It has been three months since my last post. Our family was very busy. I kept saying “I’ll post to the blog tomorrow.” I guess today is tomorrow.

As many of you may know, in early January we found out that we were expecting our third child. Jason and I were very excited. Of course, Joshua wanted a brother and Mercy wanted a sister.

We have spent the beginning of 2007 keeping busy with home-school, field trips, little league, soccer, and enjoying friends and family. All the while praying for, dreaming of, and planning for our new addition set to arrive September 5.

This past Monday, I went in for a regular prenatal check-up. The doctor could not find a heartbeat. And an ultrasound was done. The doctor then told me that our Little One had died. I was just past my 16th week of pregnancy.

Yesterday, I went into Pomona Valley to have outpatient surgery to remove the baby. I am now home recovering physically, grieving emotionally, and being comforted spiritually.

Jason and I want to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers. We are seeking comfort from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We know that, even though it may be hard see right now or perhaps ever in this life, “all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28).”

This post is in honor of our dear friend Tony! We went over to his home on Christmas day & had an excellent dinner which he & his sister Anca put much work into. Tony cooked two roast ducks (each seasoned a different way), baked quince, and broccoli. Anca made an excellent pumpkin beer soup, & delicious walnut mashed potatoes. They cooked enough for a small army, but since there were only six of us, there were leftovers. Tony sent us home with duck, and today we had DUQUITOS & QUACKOS!! Thank you Mr. Vasile.
